Rereading this for the umpteenth time to tie in with watching the BBC series - and finding I'm just as hooked as ever. I was pleased to find that this edition has some 19th-century illustrations by Hugh Thomson.

I am working my way through Austen's works. This year,
was up, and I rather enjoyed it. One of my friends has pointed out to me that this book is an editing nightmare, and she is right to an extent. There are a number of long, run-on sentences. There are also times when conversations between characters are taking place and it's difficult to follow who is saying what. Because of these issues, at times I felt that Austen was either rushing to get this book written or to get it on the shelf.

I loved the characters in this book - they interested me much more than the ones in Pride and Prejudice, which is the only other Jane Austen book I've read so far. Mrs. Elton, for as vulgar and snotty as she was, was highly entertaining. It cracked me up how she'd go on and on and no one would really say anything to her, but would confess they didn't like her behind her back. And also since she so didn't care for Emma, her reaction to Knightley's proposal was hilarious! Speaking of Knightley, I
