Purple Hibiscus would be great paired beside Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. Kambili is a 15 year old Nigerian who has a fanatical Catholic father who is rich. Her private life is coming apart at the seams while publicly her father is a hero to many and generous to all but his own family. ...more

This was incredible - it might be my favorite of hers, although now I want to go back and reread Americanah since I listened to it on audiobook the first time. It was so sad and powerful, although the dramatic ending didn't quite fit for me. I wanted more to integrate it and understand how it came to that from the mothers perspective or with more intimacy between the protagonist and her mother. Still, so moving and powerful. ...more

There were some stunningly beautiful passages in this book but for some reason it felt like a slog.
