The characters, the setting, and the pacing of this novel are crafted with skill. While there is a little mature content, this is a literary novel and the content is not gratuitous nor there for scintillation.
This book does not have a lot of happiness in it, but surprisingly it didn't bother me. This might be because I think the insight into lower caste life in the slums was worth it. The author made some of the plot predictable (to the cynics among us?) but that didn't take away fro ...more

I loved, loved, loved this book. It felt real. And, by the author's comments on the book, parts were indeed inspired by her own childhood growing up in India. The dialogue seemed very real, as well. I heard the words Achcha, baba, etc. often when in India, so it felt as though I was back there. Even if you don't know a thing about India, this is an amazing, amazing book.
