What Members Thought

Jane Austen is always fun and this book was even more fun for its sarcasm on the gothic genre and, especially, on the silly ways the genre's readers acted. However, it is obviously Austen's first novel, as the transitions in plot are jarring, with a staid first half and a somewhat unbelievable second half. Still, Austen's worst is still pretty good.

I actually would give this book 3.5 stars. It's a fun, light, easy read, and extremely well-written, but the story itself is sometimes engaging and other times not so much. At times, I found Catherine's character to be too naive, which at one point, became slightly annoying. However, Austen's satirical slant and her commentary on class structure and social mores gave a good view of what society was like at that time.
