What Members Thought

What a fascinating book, story, & characters. The two main characters--imprisoned during the Siege of Leningrad in WWII--are real characters, both funny & honest/transparent. Kolya is quite a talker, and quickly takes charge on their seemingly impossible feat to secure a dozen eggs in exchange for their lives.
My first Benioff book; not to be my last. Good stuff & good writing.
My first Benioff book; not to be my last. Good stuff & good writing.

A tale of an unlikely pair, saved from execution by being given an impossible task- sounds like a fairy tale, but in wartime nothing could be further from that genre. Deprivation, cold, starvation, near-death episodes, and even humour, make this very readable though at times sad. I found myself being keen to get back to it whenever I could.
