Engaging and thoughtful, and I very much appreciate the author's ability to bring together a story with a strong emotional core built around friendship rather than the more-typical romance. Leaves you pondering the grey areas that emerge even in situations that seem clear-cut.

The Gift of Rain has everything you could want in a story: war and peace; friendship and loss; beauty and hatred; family and love. Most of all, the book is beautifully written,with a wonderful sense of place.

A unanimous thumbs-up from my very selective book club members. True confession is that I did not finish the book...it was due back at the library after the second renewal and I was preoccupied with transitioning each of my children into a new school.
This was a 3.5 star read for me.
