For such a highly recommended author I had higher expectations. I already bought all his other books so I'll read the others.

Two girls have been kidnapped and strangeled in Scotland. John Rebus is assigned to the case along with many other police officers. There is also a plot involving John's brother Michael, who is a hypnotist, and Jim Stevens, a newspaper reporter. This book is really all over the place until the last 50 ages or so. I am interested enough in the main character to read the next book especially since the author wasn't trying to write a crime book with this boo, though he did.

Rankin kicks off the series well with a creepy, dark mystery that sets the town and gives us the perfect introduction to the superlative Inspector Rebus.
