Two girls have been kidnapped and strangeled in Scotland. John Rebus is assigned to the case along with many other police officers. There is also a plot involving John's brother Michael, who is a hypnotist, and Jim Stevens, a newspaper reporter. This book is really all over the place until the last 50 ages or so. I am interested enough in the main character to read the next book especially since the author wasn't trying to write a crime book with this boo, though he did. ...more

Rankin kicks off the series well with a creepy, dark mystery that sets the town and gives us the perfect introduction to the superlative Inspector Rebus.
