My goal this year is to double the # of books I read over last year, so I'm just grabbing books off the shelf in my library and giving them a whirl. I can't ever remember reading a cozy mystery, but I got through this one just fine, probably because I could relate to the somewhat nerdy protagonist.
My favorite character was the housekeeper. In telling it like it is, she seemed the smartest of the lot, giving credence to what I always say, which is that the truth is dangerous.

Unassuming, that's what this book feels like for me. Unexceptional but warm, charming and delightful. Isabel Dalhousie is a philosopher with so much time in the world to think about life- and all of its consequences. A touch of mystery gives this book a more juicy feeling. I can't say that this is my favorite from McCall Smith, but I will definitely savor the next installments! Can't resist the Edinburgh's charms!

Listened to this 1st in the Isabel Dalhousie Sunday Philosopher's Club series--somehow I'd missed reading this one; I'm up through #5 in the series now, I believe. Was fun hearing it read with a Scottish accent.

This was book was, quite simply, okay. If it hadn't been a simple read -- easy prose, and not too much thought involved -- I probably wouldn't have finished it; as it was, I wanted just enough to find out the secret to the whodunnit that I kept reading. (Had I know the secret, I might not have finished; I found the twist at the end very unappealing.) I'll stick to Poirot, I think.

I love McCall Smith's No. 1 Ladies Detective Angency books, but this book just didn't do it for me. One thing is, I think Isabel Dalhousie is supposed to be in her mid to late 30s, but she comes across like she could be a contemporary of Miss Marple. Also, I didn't find any character or situation compelling enough to really engage me.
