Elizabeth Peters is a great example of a writer who has long been on my radar but I never actually picked up a book of hers. This book, the first in a long series (hooray!), consists of Amelia Peabody’s recounting of a frightening series of events during her boat trip up the Nile River, while stopped at an archaeological site. Typical cosy mystery with well-developed characters and exotic setting. Strong feminist lead but I don't want to continue the series anymore, with all the xenophobia and Anglophilia with references to the "Master Race". Shudder.

I've just never been as smitten with this well-known historical mystery/romance series as some of my friends are. Truth to tell, Amelia and co. got on my nerves a bit. More interesting (in my opinion) are the real-life characters that the author drew from , such as Amelia Edwards and Mary Kingsley. Guess the main problem is that I'm not a fan of the historical romance genre.

i did not start the series with this book (in fact, i read several books in this series before this one), so i had to go back and find it. i like the author's style of writing, and even though the 'bad guy' is pretty obvious (in this one), it is an ejoyable read. the characters are well developed, and there is still room to grow for them.
