Best to trust no one, even if they seem friendly. A smiling girl one day is a girl with a stone bashing in the brains of a baby the next. This is the only truth. One can think there are such things as loyalty and trust and kindness but they are devil cats. In the end they are only smoke and cannot be grasped.


I'm not even sure how I feel about this book. It was good, but I didn't like it. I suppose that averages out to 3 stars. I don't think any part of my review is a spoiler, but if you are

An amazing apocalyptic vision: AgriGen and other GMO corps have taken over the world. Loved the Anderson and Emiko characters. Loved the chesires and megodonts and all the other details that are just not all that far outside the realm of possibility...

While I admired this book's clever and chilling premise, ultimately I didn't find the emotional toehold I'd hoped for in Bacigalupi's large array of characters. Still, he's to be commended for such an ambitious undertaking. There's a Dickensian sweep to his novel that's matched by its implacable sense of inevitability as the characters are swept up in tides of change.

Jonathan Davis' slow-paced reading brought out nuances of character but may have been more leisurely than some listeners would enj
