Heading: To Thine Ownself Be True

In Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor, 12 year-old Sunny is trying to find her fit in the world based on who she is as a person, but is challenged by how others see her. This isn't what I expected. This is a fine children's story, in the tradition of magical children's quest stories (such as, yes, Harry Potter): a young girl, who has always felt somewhat ostracized, discovers that she really is different, and she has magical powers! and there is an entire magical world that she didn't know about! Great middle grade book! +1 to this entire review:

Nnedi Okorafor was born in the United States to two Nigerian parents, the African country where she also sets Akata Witch. Akata Witch is often described as an African Harry Potter, but more than a mere emulation of Harry Potter, it feels like a response to HP and similar British, middle grade fantasy. With juju knives, spirit faces, and Nigerian festivals, it’s a unique creative YA fantasy that’s so much fun. Be sure to also read Akata Warrior.

A really great YA fantasy, I couldn't put it down, read it too fast, just want to go back there now. Can't wait for #2.

This book opened me to a world of Nigerian language, customs, clothes and food, and for this I am glad to have the opportunity to read this book, and the author had the opportunity to publish it.
I looked up the recipe for egg stew that Sunny made for breakfast and made it myself.

The plot is compelling- a girl who finds herself in a world of magic, who finds some friends and needs to stop an evil being.

The way the story is written doesn't allow it to unfold smoothly. I would read a scenario an
