What Members Thought

Eco is a brilliant writer and storyteller, because he was able to take the politics of religion and interweave it with a mystery against a backdrop of medieval times. The complexity of this work may be daunting reading to some, because it is not the type of book that can be read in one sitting. It's better read in smaller doses so that what is happening can sink in, especially because there is much theory intertwined with the overall story.

This book is so full of historical/religious facts and stories I almost forgot that it also has mysteries (and one of the main reasons why I actually read this book). It's so solid and compact, and if this book is a cake, I had felt really full before I read half of it.
Luckily, the narrator, Adso, a young novice who became the assistant of Brother William (the main protagonist), is very easy to be liked. I also love William - the character who reminded me a lot of Sherlock Holmes.

This has been on my to-do list for many years. I am glad I finally read it. Good mystery. Excellent library and librarian descriptions. Too long and wordy for today's readers even though it was only written in 1986.
