What Members Thought

This is a book of two halves. The construction is clever, consisting of a series of notebooks put together after the disappearance of the main character by his secretary, the wonderful Mrs Brown. (For me, she was the most interesting character, which is quite something in a book containing people like Frida Kahlo). The writing style changes to match the age of the character, the notebooks themselves having been kept from when he was very young.

Because I loved The Poisonwood Bible so much, I really built this novel up in my head before reading and I was a little disappointed. The first half was interesting, but for me when the scene switches to Ashville, NC the story started to grind. I guess that's the problem with writing such a fantastic book; it's impossible to top, but your readers still expect something just as good. I think I'll read the Poisonwood Bible again.
