What Members Thought

This is a book of two halves. The construction is clever, consisting of a series of notebooks put together after the disappearance of the main character by his secretary, the wonderful Mrs Brown. (For me, she was the most interesting character, which is quite something in a book containing people like Frida Kahlo). The writing style changes to match the age of the character, the notebooks themselves having been kept from when he was very young.

I hate saying this but I was disappointed. The narrator was too detached for my taste and though I loved the sections with Frida Kahlo, I missed her once the story moved to the U.S. It was a little too preachy too (she's preaching to the choir on most of these issues). I love B.K. but this was not my favorite.

A fictional memoir/journal whose protagonist lived in Mexico with Leon Trotsky and wrote in Asheville, North Carolina only to end up being persecuted by McCarthy. Unlike any of Kingsolver's other books.

Gets off to a slow start but eventually picks up steam. Shepherd is deeply idealized, but Kingsolver does a nice job at presenting the political climate of his world at a more human level.
