I've wanted to read this for a long time. I thought I knew what this story was about, because I had seen the mini series on PBS in 1981. But that was a long time ago, and I was only 13, so I didn't understand all of it, and I've forgotten even more. It's a funny thing to read a story that you think you know. You end up feeling doubly surprised.

This was a lot more enjoyable than I had expected, and I got really caught up in the truly incredible love story, spanning three different continents (Europe, Asia, Australia) and years in more ways than one (view spoiler) .

It's hard to believe this book was written in 1950. The main female character Jean thinks like many women today. Since she is based on a real woman that did many of the things she did you have to admire her courage and just plain guts.
