I've wanted to read this for a long time. I thought I knew what this story was about, because I had seen the mini series on PBS in 1981. But that was a long time ago, and I was only 13, so I didn't understand all of it, and I've forgotten even more. It's a funny thing to read a story that you think you know. You end up feeling doubly surprised.

It's hard to believe this book was written in 1950. The main female character Jean thinks like many women today. Since she is based on a real woman that did many of the things she did you have to admire her courage and just plain guts. ...more
