Further proof that a book needn't be about much of anything to still be deeply evocative of a particular point in time and space. The language is wonderfully spare, the relationships deeply fraught, and the characters caught up between what they want and what they are. A great piece of quiet intensity. ...more

Not a big fan of Hemingway. I find his female characters depressing and infantile and his writing tedious. Studied his big ones in American Literature and this one was the most tolerable.
