What Members Thought

I thought that this book was good. I didn't love it. I found the writing to be not as good as The End of the Affair, which I did love. I also found the storyline to be unexciting. I understand the subtle meaning around America's role in the war, which I don't disagree with, and the difficulty of Americans in understanding and respecting other cultures. However, overall, this book didn't really capture my hear or my mind.

I feel like I can't say much without giving it away but this book is chilling. Fowler is a very interesting character who is extremely calculating. The book gives a good portrait of the situation in Vietnam in the 1950s with fighting and imminent American involvement. I also liked reading it after I had been to Saigon since I could often picture the places that were being discussed. I would recommend it to anyone though, it explores the age old emotions of love and jealousy.
