I had no idea what this book was about at first. But this has to be the funniest book I've ever read.
Just about every chapter had me laughing out loud multiple times.

I've always been interested in reading this legendary book, just not 450-pages interested, so I was pleased when my book club selected it and I was "required" to read it. Unfortunately, by the time I got to the end, I was much less pleased. I found the book's much-vaunted humor to be tiresome in the extreme, the characters far too cartoonish for me to care when bad things happen, and the entire enterprise to be about twice as long as necessary. Book club pick for June 2012, and I'm having a really hard time with it. Got through the first few chapters, but by the end I was skimming. I really dislike Yosarian, and I find the author's attempts at wit to be tiresome. Uh-oh, yet another book club pick that I am hating! I've had a really bad track record with book club picks. Oh, who am I kidding? I'm not going to read this book.

"Peace on earth would mean the end of civlization as we know it." (Joseph Heller)

Okay, now I've finally read it after all these years. And my reaction was.... ambivalence. This is a brilliant but exasperating book, and I'd be on surer footing if I could only figure out if my exasperation is something the author had intended. (I suspect not.)

It's hard to make a balanced judgement about something that has beeen woven so tightly into our collective modern culture, but I'll try.

I greatly enjoyed th

Wow, this is one helluva book!! I can't decide if I love or hate this book :D A story about war written very masterfully - not in a sad/touchy/depressing way, but hilarious, witty and absurd. This book opened up a different perspective about war: what's so great about war? What's so important about a nation? A country? What's so good to die for a place where you were born? The absurdity of all was added by the irrational, illogical concept called Catch 22 - that made you trapped in the irrationa ...more
