Moves surprisingly fast for being 600 pages, all the more so given Orringer's relatively narrow scope of a small family and a few friends. The intensity of the emotional bonds between characters definitely leaves you wanting to hold your own loved ones a little closer to you. ...more

Long and meandering, but wonderful characters and good story. I learned a lot about life for Hungarian Jews before, during, and after WWII. I listened to some of it and read the rest. Enjoyed it all.
