This book begins in a city where people go after they die. While at first they don't understand why they are there, they soon figure out that as long as they are remembered by someone still living, they remain in the city. Meanwhile, a deadly virus is rapidly spreading across the world of the living. As more and more people die, those they carry in their memories vanish from the city. The book alternates between telling of life in the city and life on Earth.

This was a re-read for me, and it did keep my interest, altho I will admit to "skimming" some sections because of lack of interest in minor characters. Interesting premise, and I liked the Antarctic saga better than "the city."
