What a wonderful story. It's about a Chinese woman, Lily, who becomes laongs with Snow Flower. The book chronicles the lives of these two women from the beginning of their childhood friendship until death. The author actually went to China to research the culture and the nu shu writings of women prior to writing the book. An interesting look at women in China, but the characterization (particularly in the book's last third) seemed forced and unnatural, almost as if See was manipulating her characters to create dramatic tension.

A wonderful story of a lifelong friendship. A clear accounting of the suffering of women in the early 19th century in China. I enjoyed this quite a bit and the narration was well done.
