Here, you have The Invention of Hugo Cabret.
One of the most charming, inovative stories I've read in a while. Half novel, half comic book, Brian Sselznick will go down as a classic children's book author with Maurice Sendeck, Dr. Seuss, and E.L. Konigsburg in my book (pun intended).

Hugo cabret is an orphan who is taken in by his uncle. When his uncle disappears Hugo continues his uncle's job of maintaining the clocks in the Paris train station while stealing food to survive and parts from the toy maker to repair an automaton which is the only thing Hugo has left from his father.
