I would probably give this book 2 1/2 stars. Maybe it was the mood that I was in last night when I read this book (or because I watching the Yankees bring the World Series home at the same time - sorry haters!), but this book just didn't move me at all. The story was ok, the ending was very cool, and I enjoyed the insights into the Chinese Cultural Revolution and what life in rural China was like during the 1960s. 3.5 stars. I enjoyed this book. From the very beginning, I was struck by the similarities of this book and The Scavenger's Daughter. The re-education of Mao, the violin being a prized and hidden possession, and of course, the books. This translation was a good one; I enjoyed the style. I wish there was a little more to the end.
