Jane, Jane, Jane. She was orphaned, scorned by her only family members, raised in an outrageously restrictive institution. Then she met Mr. Rochester. Most of us know the story from the many movies.......... but I have a confession. I never read the book until just recently (and I'm over 60) and never have watched even one of the movies all the way through. I like to read the book first. Well, I've finally done that.

This is a extraordinary well written novel and I wonder why I did not read it earlier. I think the reason is that I always thought that will be "another dull classic British novel". Well, it isn't. It is a good written romantic novel but with the rigorousness and reason specific to Albion. This is probably why I liked it so much.
The only reason I did not rate it with 5 stars is that there are some events in the book that seemed artificial. And my belief is that a novel must try as much as possib ...more

I originally gave this book one star. It was dark and had a gloomy male character. My rating at the time said a lot more about my state of mind than about the book. And, come to think of it, I had read the book years ago and was recalling it while building up my list as a new member of goodreads.
I had to revise it because I've reread it and seen three different versions of movie treatment.
I had missed the strength of character and the honesty of Jane. My apologies Jane, you truly are a hero. ...more

I thoroughly enjoyed the story from beginning to end, and was really sad to finish it. This is such a unique romance, with well developed characters. I should have read this a long time ago!
