Wow, this book was not what I expected. It was recommended to me by a friend and I’m glad I took the time to read listen to it. The story is set in biblical (old testament) times and follows the family of Jacob and his only daughter Dinah. The book is written as though Dinah were telling the story the of her family and her life. I listened to the audio version of this book which made it really seem like I was sitting with Dinah listening to her story. Dinah is mentioned in only a few lines of th

While I believe in a world of equality and enjoy having a real partner of my own, I do find myself longing for an age long since passed where women bonded through hardship and happiness. The Red Tent provides its reader with a sense of the journey and the family required to help one live through it.
The main character of Dinah is such a strong, rich voice that I immediately felt connected and safe with her. It was as though I had known her for years as the family story-weaver and through her wo ...more

A great book to reread - I had originally read it over 15 years ago and enjoyed it the second time.
I am also watching the movie on Lifetime and even through they are doing a great job with the characters, they do not have time to cover all the wonderful customs and interactions among the sisters, daughters and female role models. a great woman's book. ...more

Being named after an Old Testament Bible character, I am well versed with the stories of the male patriarchs found in Genesis. This re-telling of a very minor female character was powerful and fascinating! Anita Diamant is a strong writer that had clearly done her research and painted a vivid picture of the characters, the time, culture, landscape, etc. I was engrossed throughout.

I really liked it, but maybe should have read it in print instead of listening to an audio version, so I could keep better tack of the characters and their relations. This has been on my TBR list a long time and I had even loaned out my copy to others to read. The prose is lovely, but I can see why many see this as chick lit based on the bible. Still, recommend to others.
