This is Hosseini's second book following " The Kite Runner". The author, born in Afghanistan, emigrated to the USA in 1980.
We first meet Mariam as a young girl, the daughter of a rich man and his servant. Mariam grew up with her mother and occasional visits from her father, whom she adored. A beautifully written story. Hosseini really made me feel like I knew the characters, and I found myself getting so caught up in the story that it has been almost impossible to put down. Hosseini seems to do a great job of inserting history in the book, and has made me want to learn more about Afghanistan history.

One of my favorite reads. Although it was a little difficult to read about the plight of women in Afghanistan, the story was compelling.
It gave great context for the current situation in Afghanistan.
