Mariam and Laila suffer tormented childhoods in a world where women are not respected. Despite this, they grow up to become friends, caring for each other, saving each other from lonely lives. I liked this book as well as Kite Runner, perhaps a little better.

This story was nothing less than heartbreaking. What the female characters have to endure is inimaginable. I cried multiple times while reading this and there's nothing I love more than a story eliciting emotions from its readers. ...more

I always wondered why people stood in line waiting for a new book release, now I know. First read was Kite Runner, then I was referred to A Thousand Splendid Suns ~ I'm so glad. It has to be on my top 5 of greatest stories I have read. I love the characters and how Mr. Hosseini ties them together so eloquently. His writing flows so easily even though the characters have unfamiliar names and the settings are foreign. A beautiful, grab your heart kind of book! ...more

This book covers the life of a family, and two women in particular, over the last 30 years in Afghanistan, from the Soviet invasion through the post-Taliban rebuilding. It gave me an incredible appreciation for the roles of women and their lack of rights.
