What Members Thought

As i was making my way through the first section of Peony in Love, i was beginning to think i should have paid more heed to the valentine heart on its spine (my library system's way of signifying that it was of the romance genre) because Peony was mooning like a lovesick girl who knew not enough of the world and it was all just a little overmuch for me.

Lisa See's writing is beautiful, and I understand this book is supposed to be about the women of China (and, indeed, the world) who wanted their voices to be heard. But what I found really fascinating about it was the descriptions of Chinese rituals and superstitions, and learning what the Chinese thought (and to some extent, still think) about death. The descriptions were so vivid to me that I felt like I could really see the pavilions, the plum tree, the Viewing Terrace. Beautiful.

After reading The Snow Flower and The Secret Fan, I wasn't sure that See could deliver again, but she did so in spades. Based on true events, See does a fantastic job of developing the characters in this novel and telling the story of a community of women who lived during the Qing dynasty and who sought knowledge through the reading and writing of poetry and other literary works. The writing is beautiful, and I really enjoyed reading about Chinese culture and history.
