Though this is the 16th book in the series chronologically it fits after the 10th book, The Ape Who Guards the Balance and closely connects to the 6th book The Last Camel Died at Noon. Unfortunately I read both those books quite awhile ago so it took a bit for me to get up to speed. This audiobook was exactly what I wanted: an entertaining diversion, with excellent narration by Barbara Rosenblat, who is the perfect Amelia.
The mystery itself was fairly obvious from the beginning, and it was a bit annoying that Amelia didn't see right through the scheme immediately. But the adventure was fantastic, it's got it all: riding camels through the desert, tricking the authorities, wrestling a crocodile, a well-guarded oasis, a secret passageways in a secret city, climbing cliffs bar ...more

You have to love the Peabody-Emersons. This was like a reunion with old friends that I hadn't seen in a while and forgot just how much fun they are.
