I am certain this was a case of a great book at the wrong time for me. I tried once, set it aside, and tried again, though it never really captured me. I kept with it, because the narrator on audio was fantastic to listen to, though I suspect there were just too many characters to feasibly keep up with for me at the moment on audio. The sweetest story you could possibly imagine involving drug dealers, the Mafia and a drunk at the center of it all. There's also a church, a housing project in Brooklyn and a cop. The story is a bit over the top but the author makes it so believable, you never doubt it for a second.
The book is a little slow to get going but unless you're some major curmudgeon, you probably won't be sorry if you stick with it. ...more

My favorite book I've read this year (and likely the last one). What a story! What characters! The warmth and humor and kindness woven into this inventive book were exactly what I needed to end this difficult year. Thank you, James McBride!
