I'm so glad there's book about the women murdered by JTR that keeps him as a footnote in the telling. Rubenhold knits together all that can be known about the women's lives, flags what's unreliable information, and fills in the gaps with researched speculation. I'm puzzled though by the author's stated goal of showing that not all the women were prostitutes as claimed in the accounts of the time and subsequent lore. I think her actual goal was to show that Polly, Annie, Elisabeth, Kate, and Mary

Interesting perspective on the Jack the Ripper fable; these are the stories of the five women Jack the Ripper murdered. A thoughtful, well researched history, this peek into 1880s London was fascinating and the warning that we should not see the villain as the protagonist hit me in the gut. Especially this time of year. #nonfiction #scarybecauseitstrue
