Shelves: horror-fiction

I very much enjoyed this sinister and surreal gothic novel but I must admit it did unnerve me so that I checked the locks on my doors and windows. A story of mistrust, hidden secrets and misplaced family loyalties, everything a good horror novel should produce. "Mexican Gothic" is much like the book "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson, in that nothing is what it seems and the characters start to fracture. Mycologists would appreciate this somewhat crazy, creepy gothic story. Not my usual genre but it held my attention.

I listened to the audiobook version and can I just say....it’s FANTASTIC. I couldn’t wait to get in the car (I listen to audiobooks while driving). Imagine my excitement when I discovered the novel will soon be a limited series on HULU!

If I had to describe Mexican Gothic, I’d mark it as a cross between Wuthering Heights and...Stephen King (the lighter end of his horror spectrum). Between the wonderful writing and equally great narrator, I was instantly transported to an old-school gothic version ...more
