What's not to like about a book where the protagonist is saved by books? Adunni is given hope, freedom and life because of a dream of education which is realized with the help of some new friends.

I thought some of the plot points were a bit much, hard to believe and a bit reminiscent of other books. Also, I listened to the audio version and found the narration way too hard to understand at too many points.
That said, the main character was beautifully drawn, beautifully written and so touching that that overrode any complaints.

I am really glad for the author and the girls of Nigeria that most people gave this book 5 stars. After our discussion in book club I actually liked it much better. Initially I could not get over all the horrible things Adunni had to go through, but lots of others pointed out the positive things like the people who helped her, the optimism with which she lived her life, her drive to get educated and help other children in a similar situation ... It was much better looking at the glass half full
