While I took a little while to become fully engaged in the story, I ended up thoroughly enjoying this novel. I do not generally read the fantasy genre but I am very intrigued to read more by Leigh Bardugo and I truly hope this book is the first in a series. I found the characters to be complex and to grow to like them as the story went along. I appreciated that they all seemed to have good and not so great sides to them. Shelves: fantasty-sf, 2019-finished

Audiobook. Dark. Scary. A slow and head-spinning start (I think it would've been easier to keep the houses straight if I'd had a physical book that allowed me to flip back and forth between events and maybe reference the list at the end but I was listening to the audiobook), but so worth the buildup as time straightened and threads aligned. I struggled with this book for the first half. I think part of the problem was that it was very different from what I expected it to be. Not sure what I expected, but something different from what felt like an adult version of Harry Potter, set at Yale. At least in some ways. But I did get in to it by about half way through, mostly wanting to know the answers to the mysteries. I’m assuming, based on the ending, that this is the first in a series and of books.
