1/18/2023. I read this back in 2020, and I honestly didn't know how to rate it. The dark academia feel to it did resonate. This book is very dark, but I enjoyed the literary references. Bardugo had me hunting for some obscure works. I reread this because I wanted to read the second book Hell Bent, and to be honest, I had forgotten everything from this book, even one of the main characters. 4.5 stars rounded down. Alex Stern has been able to see ghosts all her life. After some tragic events Alex is recruited to attend Yale and be a member of Lethe house. Lethe oversees the other 8 secret societies at Yale, all of whom use a different form of magic. The book started a bit slow but it really picked up it's pace towards the end. It was creepy. I listened to the audiobook version of this, fantastic reader! Loved the complexity of the secret societies and worlds the author has built into New Haven, CT and Yale. Loved the gritty, intense, gifted, tortured soul of a main character. Looking forward to book 2!

4.5 stars, rounded up. Terrific fantasy book. It lulls a little in the middle but overall great characters, terrific plot and wonderful integration of the real world of Yale/New Haven and the imagined world of secret societies.

Audiobook. Dark. Scary. A slow and head-spinning start (I think it would've been easier to keep the houses straight if I'd had a physical book that allowed me to flip back and forth between events and maybe reference the list at the end but I was listening to the audiobook), but so worth the buildup as time straightened and threads aligned. Had to listen during daylight or with lots of lights on at the start, but so glad to know good guys still exist. Also - kind of thrilling to wonder which par ...more
