I’m struggling with my rating for this book. It was very good, but maybe because I read so much hype about it, I’m not feeling like it was quite a 5 star read for me. Very close though.
It’s very impressive for a first novel, that’s for sure. The world of this book is so specific and so clearly drawn that you can see, hear, taste, smell everything. I loved that about it. A beautiful, moving story about a young boy and his love for his alcoholic mother. I put off reading this novel for a long time. I expected this Booker Prize winner to be grim and depressing, and some parts are, but it’s also gorgeous storytelling with humorous details, wonderful immersion into the 1980s working-class Glasgow setting, and two complex, flawed, and unforgettable characters: the indomitable Agnes and her devoted son Shuggie.
