What Members Thought

This book is a novel that begins in the form of a letter addressed to Ocean Vuong’s mother, who is illiterate. Within the letter, Vuong tells the story of Little Dog and the issues that he and his family have faced over time, resulting from war, migration, and trying to fit into a society that seemingly had no use for them.

This book was hard to rate. The prose was a 5+ but the story was only a 3 for me. I don’t have words to describe the words of this book so I’m going to borrow from Roxanne Gay’s review. ‘There are so many lines that gutted me or exhilarated me or stunned me. The prose was, perhaps, too beautiful, too resonant, without enough story behind it’.
I will try some of his poetry, I imagine it will be breathtaking.
