This book had all of the right components: questions and exploration of racial and cultural identity, family lineage and interesting dynamics, and an intriguing premise (a glimpse into this family's life at the apex of the patriarch's reign). But the whole thing fell flat for me. I didn't enjoy the writing style at all; I found the scenes oddly constructed and confusing.
