Hadn't read a John Grisham book in many years. Glad I gave this one a try. He did a good job illustrating the predatory tactics of the coal companies, the precarious and vulnerable position the destruction of the unions left the workers and their families in, and the destruction of priceless, irreplaceable mountains, streams, and communities, the toxic impacts of the strip mining industry. I liked learning about the issues in coal mining but I was too annoyed by the lead character. 2% into the novel, she was already humbled by the recession but she kept playing a hard-to-get, entitled, demanding city girl when getting wooed by multiple parties until 98% into the book. She had no perceptible strong merits aside from being at the right place.
