Over 20 years ago, Lisa Scottoline started writing legal thrillers. Scottoline intrigued me, because she was a young lawyer breaking into the publishing business, who tried to inform the reader about the law through explanation of procedural requirements and case law precedent. Scottoline also set her books in and around the Philadelphia area, which made the books more personal for me. The voice of the narrator didn’t change much when shifting perspectives, so sometimes I missed a bit of detail as I hadn’t expected the shift to a new point of view. Doesn’t detract from the story necessarily, but still it might bias you in believing who might be the bad guy in this story. “Would you know a sociopath if you met one ?”
This is the main question to keep in mind as you read this intense novel. But sometimes it’s hard when you are so absorbed in the story and the characters and wanting to know whodunnit .
I felt very frustrated with Dr. Parrish because he was a suspect in the story and did nothing to help himself because of “confidentiality” issues with a psychiatric patient . Which is another reason this a great novel. It brings up the issue of mental illness which is ...more

Eric Parrish is chief of psychiatry at Havemeyer Hospital in Philadelphia. he's going through a bitter custody battle with his estranged wife over their daughter Hannah. Then a sociopath targets Eric and his life begins falling apart. The main mystery in the book is trying to figure out who the sociopath is. A bit slow to get started but it picks up about a third of the way in.Plenty of twists and turns in the plot to keep me interested
