My daughter asked me to read this book since she had read it in school. The book is written in a poetry format and features a teenage, Afro-Dominican girl who is trying to balance her Catholic upbringing with her feelings of first love. Acevedo's captures the challenge of teens trying to reconcile their need for independence and authenticity with the expectations that her parents and society place on them. This is an outstanding story. I really loved it. It is well written. I love Xiomara. She is scrappy, strong. She had a lot to contend with. Her mom was so hard on her, very religious. Xiomara rebelled a bit against that. She felt smothered and not heard,invisible. She has a brother, Xavier ,who has his own problems.

This book was an awesome coming of age story told in verse by an amazing poet author.
