Quite simply, marvelous. One of those books worth rereading for its insight and formidable command of language.

Books like this are what I like to call "great and dreadful." It reminds me of the kind of literature, film, and music I admired as a teenager and college student (e.g. J.D. Salinger, Wes Anderson) but without the endearing charm. The writing is not without skill and there is a lot to unpack, but it's so incredibly bleak and depressing that I'm not sure it's worth it. I wasn't expecting this to be such an epic love story . From the title, I figured it would be about a group of friends who sit around talking about what's normal and what's quirky, that sort of thing that's deep & meaningful when you're 20. But instead this is about two people who unexpectedly find a deep connection as teens, and then they (literally) fuck around and find out. Kind of like Catherine and Heathcliff, except Connell & Marianne are not completely psychotic assholes, they are more ..
