I enjoy reading Lisa See's books. She does a lot of research while writing her books, and I always learn something about history or another culture. The Island of Sea Women is no different. See delves into the life of the haenyo, women from Jeju Island who dive deep into the seas to collect food from ocean to feed their families or to sell them for money to help support their families. These woman are providers, leaders and mothers. Their courage and physical abilities are astounding.

This is a gem of a book. A lot of nonfiction information wrapped in the guise of a novel. I knew virtually nothing about Korean history or what went on in said country prior to world War II. Now I am somewhat better informed. The information about female divers was fascinating.

It was very interesting to see how this matrifocal society lived when left to their own devices. Then the huge number of tragedies that were instigated on this society. So sad. A very good book.
