Susan Orlean is a masterful writer. She researches and researches and researches her subject. She interviews relevant people. She visits relevant sites. She goes off on wild tangents and finds a way to include these in her book. She picks out the zaniest parts, the oddly paradoxical parts, the whimsical parts of her information and she makes it into a book.

What an interesting book! It is of special appeal to librarian and all book lovers who care about libraries. It deals with the tragic library fire in the huge Central Library of Los Angeles and the devastating losses that occurred. But it is more than just a description of a tragedy and it aftermath; it is a volume of history and hope for book lovers everywhere.

An ode to the library and a tome for true bibliophiles. Susan Orlean does a fantastic job of intertwining the civic and architectural history of the LA Public Library, portraits of the legions of librarians who have manned its desks, thoughts on the ever-changing role that libraries play in our communities, and the mystifying if ultimately unsatisfying tale of the 1986 fire that destroyed or damaged 1.1 million books.
