It's hard to like a story if you've already read it in another version and found that one perfect. Song of Achiless is THE BOOK about Achiless and Patroclus - and nothing can beat that. The second star is only because there were decent lines like the spider metaphor, the island of efficiency metaphor, the walnut simile which was repeated exactly in the same situation.

I'm a huge, huge fan of fictionalized retellings of Greek mythology. Possibly my favorite book of all time is Circe by Madeline Miller which is full of magic and feminine power. The biggest problem I had with this book is the absolute flatness of Briseis's character. I understand the point the author was trying to make: that the myth and story is about Achilles, Agamemnon, and Patroclus, and that people (like me) are not going to want to hear about Briseis's story and the experience o ...more
