Another well written novel by Jane Harper! This one set in the outback of Australia involves a grieving and worried family who is missing one of the 3 adult sons. As the story unfolds, characters are introduced, both within and outside of the family. Clearly a whodunnit but also a whydunnit.

... people pretend to themselves that they are fine all the time.
A man died from exposure in the Australian outback. People think he killed himself, but why? Why would he want to kill himself? Why would someone want him dead?
This was completely compelling.
There are a lot of similar themes with her first book, The Dry. (I kind of wonder if she wrote both books at the same time, and through editing ended up with The Dry, but still had enough book left to pull this one together too.) Small t ...more
3.5 stars. Instead of a locked room mystery, we have a big-sky mystery (man dies in the outback all alone). I loved being immersed in the vast, unforgiving environment. But the ending felt a bit rushed and too neat, with new details emerging that weren't properly foreshadowed earlier in the book.

A bit slow to start but it picked up and was a great story of family, pain, choices and redemption. Harper is such a great storyteller and I love learning about the Australian outback through her lens. Great on #audio
3.5 stars. This is really more about the family than it is the mystery. Pretty good ending though.
