In the afterward, Patton Oswalt describes McNamara as being nearly honest to a fault. It’s that honesty though that makes this book so engaging. It’s not as much about a serial killer as it is one woman’s desire to unmask that serial killer.

To prove it, the chapters where the narrative is mostly driven from McNamara’s notes become a cold, clinical contrast from the beating heart we hear in the rest of the book.

A good read for sure, from a great writer.

Well-written and thoroughly researched account of the crimes of and investigation into the Golden State Killer, nee East Area Rapist, from the 1970s/80s in Northern California. Author Michelle McNamara also goes into her own obsession in pursuing details and new information on the case. After her untimely death, two of her researchers pulled together her writings and research to put the book together. I'm so glad they did--it would've been a shame if her material hadn't seen the light of day. Ye ...more

This is an amazing, consuming, sad, and shocking true crime story written by a voice so unique in this genre, it’s painful to think she never got to witness the capture of her obsession, the EAR/The Golden State killer. Michelle McNamara writes about what happened in the 70s in such a way that her insightful take on this particular story is painful without being gory, scary without being “a horror” and informational without being boring. I feel like I learned so much about murder and rape invest ...more

Fascinating and well-written book about the East Area Rapist, aka The Original Night Stalker, aka the Golden State Killer. Much of this happened right in my area, although I was only a baby when it was going on and not living in the area at the time. The editing was a little choppy; I would have preferred a more linear account of his crimes and the investigation rather than jumping around in time. It’s great that he’s been caught, but I wish Michelle had lived to see it.
