Not Shalvis's finest. I know it's a short, but it still felt excessively abrupt. Plus, there's a Max and a Rory and a Carl. Max could be the man or the woman or the dog. Rory could be the man or the woman ... or the dog. Carl ... could be the man. (Yes, I know about that other Carl.) I kept thinking Max was the dog. Isn't Max a "dog" name? Max was the man and Carl was the dog.
