What a sad book. As literature, it may be a little lacking. Brown kept his own voice out of this telling. He doesn't even provide a closing. It just ends with the final act of genocide and a quote by Black Elk. There is no summing it up. It leave you feeling empty, unfinished. No background or "character" development is given to any of the players. There are so many names thrown around, it became hard to keep track of who was who. A truly sad & depressing account of the slow & systematic genocide of a group of peoples who were spread across continental N. America--the American Indian peoples. Lies, deceptions, & treaties broken time & time again, over & over. What I really liked in this account is the voice of a great many Indian leaders that speak loudly down through all the years since these sad/tragic events took place. Read this book as an audiobook borrowed from our library back in the US.
